One-Handed Gaming with the Proteus Controller

From my last blog, we got a lot of requests for one handed configurations and how the Proteus Controller can be useful for gamers looking to play with one hand.

A benefit of the Proteus Controller is that it preserves the familiar feel of standard controllers while integrating adaptive features, bridging the gap between conventional and adaptive gaming devices. This is perfect for one-handed gamers who are still looking for that controller feel, which is what many of our community members are looking for!

Here are some of the configurations we were using in the office this week!

Simple Micro Joystick!

This configuration uses an analog stick at the base connected to a 3-D printed base used for turning and a trigger on the top for acceleration. We used this printed part to make it more comfortable to use on a desk but can also be used without 3D printing this part. All other essential buttons are in reach on the controller for secondary controls.

Usability — 3
This micro controller configuration works great for games that require very few inputs at a time like racing games, RPG, adventure games, and casual games. For higher-paced games that require many inputs you might want to try the more advanced configuration shown below.

Simplicity — 5
This controller is perfectly simple in design and requires very little skill to operate, especially if you don’t want to 3D print the base!

How cool it looks — 4
This design is super streamlined looking with no excess design or modules needed, making the controller look sleek and compact.

FPS/ Action game joystick!

This configuration is similar in nature to the micro joystick, but has more of a focus on FPS gaming. The base joystick is used for movement, and the thumb joystick is used for camera operation. D-pad and ABXY buttons are shown at the top for quick access and left and right triggers are at the back of the controller.

Usability — 5
This controller is more technical in nature to use, but when mastered allows for many inputs at once to be used which is pivotal for FPS games.

Simplicity — 3
This controller is a little complicated to get right and requires some remapping in the app to optimise. You also need a bit of practice before entering the battlefield!

How cool it looks — 5
Looks super cool, kind of like a Cobra!? (leaving a note to 3D print a cobra head)

What else makes the Proteus Controller perfect for one-handed gaming?

Portability

Portability is another standout feature of the Proteus Controller. Traditional adaptive controllers often come with bulky designs that can be cumbersome to transport. In contrast, the Proteus Controller maintains a compact and lightweight form factor, making it easy to carry and use in different environments.

Community

ByoWave’s commitment to the community is a critical aspect of the Proteus Controller’s success. Our community software features will become a network where users can share their configurations, tips, and experiences. This community-driven approach allows one-handed gamers to benefit from collective knowledge and discover new ways to optimize their controllers and try new ways to play!

The open-source connection mechanism is enables users to create and share custom 3D printable parts, such as the base shown in the videos, (or a cobra head!). This fosters innovation and continuous improvement, ensuring that the Proteus Controller evolves with the needs of its users. By participating in this vibrant community, one-handed gamers can find support, inspiration, and camaraderie.

Conclusion

The Proteus Controller is a game-changer for one-handed gamers. It might take a bit of getting used to, but building and trying out new things is part of the fun! Or you can wait for others to figure out what works, and try out their configurations for yourself!
