Quick Start Guide: Proteus Builder
Welcome to your new controller! This guide will help you get up and running in minutes.
1. Know Your Controller
Here’s the default button layout:
The controller starts in GIP mode (Game Input Protocol) / Controller mode, which is compatible with Xbox, PC and Steamdeck. This essentialy means that by default, the controller will read in as an Xbox controller on compatible devices.
2. Important: No Triggers and 1 Analog Stick
This controller has 8 buttons, but no triggers and one analog stick. Here are your options to get started:
-
Use with a mouse on Xbox - for games that support mixed input.
-
Switch to HID mode / Keyboard mode on PC for better compatibility (recommended) and use alongside a mouse.
-
Choose simpler games that don’t require triggers or many inputs.
Example games: Celeste, Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Street Fighter, retro titles. -
Remap missing buttons using the Function Switch (explained below).
3. How to Add Function Switch Inputs
The Function Switch lets you map extra commands to button combinations.
- Connect to the Proteus Controller App

2. Open the remapping menu

3. Select GIP Normal or HID Normal, Depending on which mode you're using.

4. Map any button to act as your function switch. (When held down, the function switch button will swap to your secondary input layer.)

5. To map the secondary input layer, switch to GIP (Function Switch) or HID (Function Switch) depending on the mode you're using

6. Add secondary inputs to your desired buttons. Whenever the Function Switch is held down, the buttons will swap to their secondary input. If you leave them as 'Disabled' they will remain as their default.

4. Switching to HID Mode (Recommended for PC)
HID mode offers better plug-and-play support on PC.
- Connect to the app
- Toggle to HID mode

Now your controller will read in as a keyboard on your devices!
