Proteus Controller Firmware Update: Up to 7x Faster Input Response

It's here! We've been working on this one for a long time, and we're so excited to finally share it with you.

Our new firmware update gives the Proteus Controller lower latency and a faster response time, up to 7× faster* than before.

The update is available now in beta.

1. Download the beta app for Windows or MacOS [Find it at byowave.com/software]. If your computer asks you to confirm opening the app: on Windows, click More info then Run anyway. On Mac, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
   
2. Log in and connect your controller
3. Follow the prompts to install the new firmware update. (*Note: for this update, you will need to have only a Power Cube and a Charger connected, so make sure to remove all other modules). Keep it connected until the update is finished.
4. Go to Advanced Settings / Power Cube Settings
5. Select on High Performance Mode.
6. To return to the previous mode and save battery life, select Eco Mode.

You're ready to go!

Good to know

High Performance Mode is optional. Going faster uses a bit more power, so battery life is about 20% shorter with High Performance Mode on.

This change is on the Power Cube, not the dongle. If you have more than one Power Cube and switch between them, remember to toggle your speed to your preference.

This update is in beta. If something doesn't seem right, let us know at info@byowave.com. If all goes well, this update will be released to the main app soon, so you can wait to use it if you prefer. If you're reading this after September 2026, it may already be there.

V2 hardware only. V1 and V2 Power Cubes now use quite different communication firmware, so this beta update may not be compatible with V1. However, we are still testing and will share an update if it can be made available for V1 hardware.

For the curious.

Results. In a 4-hour test, average latency dropped from 69 ms to 10 ms and maximum latency from 97 ms to 22 ms.

Tested using a standard 4-cube configuration with a standard button layout, over 4 hours, while connected to power on Windows. Results vary by configuration and setup.

What changed. The Proteus Controller is modular, so every module you add is part of the conversation between your controller and the dongle. We rebuilt how the system communicates so it sends messages far more often, and your button presses get through much sooner. That's also why it uses more battery. This update is for the Power Cube, and your dongle doesn't need updating. If you have two Power Cubes and you switch between them, remember to toggle your speed to your preference. 

What about polling rate? This update improves latency. The Polling rate hasn't changed. Polling rate measures how often your computer or console checks the controller for input. Latency measures how long between you pressing a button and it registering, and that's what you feel when you play.
